Cinquieme: entering cycle 4

Cinquieme opens cycle 4, the block of college that leads to the Brevet. It is a more demanding year than Sixieme, for two reasons. First, the sciences separate: physics-chemistry, SVT and technology become subjects in their own right, each with its own logic, vocabulary and methods. Second, mathematics tips into abstraction with two new and structural ideas: negative numbers and algebra with letters.

Those two ideas are the foundations of all the algebra that follows, in college and in lycee. A student who owns the sign rules and calculation with letters walks into Quatrieme calmly. A student who lets them settle at half strength accumulates fragilities that surface later, usually at the worst possible moment.

My work in Cinquieme aims to make these new ideas concrete and comprehensible, and to help your child juggle several scientific subjects without scattering their effort.

Physics-chemistry in Cinquieme

Physique-chimie becomes a subject of its own in Cinquieme. Students meet matter and its states, mixtures, the first transformations, and the ideas of motion, energy and signals such as light and sound. It is concrete and experimental, but it already demands rigour in writing up and in the use of units, which is where most of the marks are lost.

Where students struggle in Cinquieme

The two classic obstacles of Cinquieme are negative numbers and algebra with letters. The sign rules look simple written down, but they generate recurring errors as soon as they are combined. Calculation with letters throws many students who were doing very well while everything was still numbers. Both deserve real time, because they come back in nearly the whole syllabus of the following years.

The other difficulty is organisational: managing three distinct sciences, each with its own tests and methods. A student who scatters their effort can look like they are not keeping up, when in fact they simply lack a way to distribute the work across the week. That, too, is something tutoring fixes.

I work with Cinquieme students from Lycee Marie de France, College Stanislas and other Montreal schools following the French curriculum, in person and online through Microsoft Teams and OneNote. I went through the French system myself, hold a B.Sc. from McGill and an M.Sc. from Concordia, and have more than 10 years of experience with this syllabus, its textbooks and what the teachers expect. One person for mathematics, physics-chemistry and SVT, so you are not coordinating three tutors' schedules.
