Nothing in the North American system prepares a family for the Grand oral. Your child stands, without notes, in front of a panel of teachers who have never met them, and defends a scientific question for twenty minutes while being interrogated on it. It is closer to a thesis defence than to a class presentation, and it is worth a coefficient of 10, more than philosophy.
The examination is conducted in French. If your child is fully bilingual this changes nothing; if they think in English and study in French, it is worth rehearsing out loud early, because the gap between understanding a topic and defending it aloud under pressure is where the marks go.
The Grand oral is one of the terminal examinations of the general Baccalaureate, with a coefficient of 10. It takes place in June, at the end of Terminale. In practice the student prepares two questions with their teachers over the year. On the day, the panel picks one. After a preparation period, the student gives their presentation, then discusses the substance of the question with the panel and explains how it fits their plans for higher education.
Plenty of students who are excellent on paper underestimate this examination. With a coefficient of 10 and specific preparation, the Grand oral can make a real difference to the final grade, in either direction.

A good Grand oral topic is neither an encyclopedic survey nor a vague theme: it is a real problem, anchored in one or two specialities, that can be treated rigorously in a few minutes. In science, the usual route starts from a concrete phenomenon and leads to a precise mathematical, physical or chemical question.

The usual traps: a topic so broad it cannot be treated in depth, a presentation learned by heart that collapses at the first question, a vague central question, or an artificial link to the student's study plans. Many students also neglect speaking practice entirely, focusing only on the content, and then discover on the day that knowing something and defending it aloud are different skills.
