FASNY, a school with two diplomas

The French-American School of New York, known as FASNY, is at 320 East Boston Post Road in Mamaroneck, Westchester County, with campuses in Mamaroneck and Larchmont. It has around 570 students and is accredited by the French Ministry of Education across its entire programme, fifteen year groups from pre-school to Terminale.

What makes it distinctive is unique in the area: FASNY is the only school in the New York region accredited both by the French Ministry of Education and by the International Baccalaureate Organization. A student can therefore aim at the French Baccalaureate or at the IB diploma, two paths whose mathematics overlap heavily but whose examinations share neither format nor expectations for the write-up.

That is precisely what I cover. I teach the Mathematics speciality and the Maths Expertes option of the French programme, and IB mathematics, Analysis and Approaches as well as Applications and Interpretation. A family still undecided at the end of Seconde can therefore prepare both routes without changing tutor midway.

French Baccalaureate or IB diploma: what actually differs

The choice is made at the end of Seconde and it shapes the final two years. Here, in mathematics and science, are the differences that genuinely matter, setting aside questions of destination.

The write-up A justified proof is required. A right answer with no justification is worth close to nothing. Method is expected and marked, but less formalised. The result counts for more.
Statistics and probability Present, but a minority next to analysis and geometry in space. Far heavier, especially in Applications and Interpretation.
The calculator Use is constrained; several papers expect calculation carried out by hand. The graphing calculator is central to part of the examinations.
Assessed personal work The Grand oral, a twenty minute presentation anchored in the specialities. A written mathematical exploration, plus the Extended Essay.
Legibility in France The direct route into classes preparatoires and engineering schools. Recognised, though equivalence sometimes requires an extra step.
Legibility in North America Well recognised, particularly by Canadian universities. Very well understood by American and Canadian universities.

On the mathematical substance there is no trap: limits, differentiation, integration, sequences and vectors are on both syllabuses. The core work is done once. It is the examination format, the vocabulary and the style of writing that are trained separately, and that takes far less time than families imagine.

Why the online format suits Westchester particularly well

No travel, no traffic

A French-speaking tutor who genuinely commands the speciality syllabus is rarely found in Mamaroneck or Larchmont, and going down to Manhattan for an hour of tutoring makes no sense. The session happens from home, immediately after school.

Westchester and Montreal are both on Eastern time, and the clocks change on the same days either side of the border. The weekly slot never moves.

Everything is written in a shared digital notebook: proofs, annotated corrections, diagrams. The student comes back to it to revise, and parents can see concretely what was covered.

French Bac or IB: how to choose?

It depends on where the student is heading. The French Bac with Maths Expertes is the clearest route into French classes preparatoires and engineering schools. The IB is very well recognised by American, Canadian and British universities. Mathematically the content overlaps heavily.

How do sessions work from Westchester?

By video, on Teams and OneNote, with a shared whiteboard. No trip into Manhattan, and Montreal is in the same time zone, so the session sits right after school.
