Two things surprise English-speaking families here. First, physique-chimie is a single subject with a single grade. Physics and chemistry are taught together, examined together, and a weakness in one drags the other down. There is no separate chemistry mark to fall back on.
Second, this is one of the very few Baccalaureate subjects with a genuine practical examination. The ECE, epreuve de competences experimentales, puts the student in a laboratory with a protocol, real apparatus and a clock. It is marked, it counts, and it is prepared differently from anything on paper.
The Physics-Chemistry speciality is one of the speciality subjects of the French general Baccalaureate, chosen at the end of Seconde and followed through Premiere and Terminale. It is most often paired with the Mathematics speciality, whose tools it uses constantly, or with SVT for students heading toward health and biology.
In Terminale it is examined by a written paper with a coefficient of 16 sat in June, completed by the practical examination carried out in a laboratory. That makes it one of the few specialities to assess laboratory practice as well as written work.

The written speciality paper runs several hours and covers the whole syllabus through exercises that mix physics and chemistry. It requires analysing a situation, choosing the right model, carrying the calculation carefully and writing up a clear line of reasoning. The mathematical tools of Terminale, derivatives and antiderivatives especially, are called on throughout.
The practical examination takes place in a laboratory: the student runs a protocol, takes measurements, exploits the results and writes their conclusions. It has to be prepared specifically, because time management and method decide the mark far more than knowledge does.
I prepare both: past paper practice for the written exam, and experimental method for the practical.
We start from the physical meaning before the formula, so the student knows which model applies to a situation they have not seen before.
A great many errors come from arithmetic or from the mathematical tools rather than the physics. We shore those up alongside the Mathematics speciality.

One exercise set per chapter of the Premiere and Terminale syllabus, in the format of a class test: 10 questions marked out of 100, a first part on the fundamentals and a second at Baccalaureat level, with a full worked solution for every question. Each chapter also has a revision sheet, because in physics-chemistry the marks are lost on precise gestures: a unit not converted, a diagram drawn without the normal, a reaction table filled in without finding the limiting reagent, one significant figure too many.
