What the Baccalaureat is worth in North America

This is the question English-speaking parents ask most, and the answer is good news. McGill, Concordia, the University of Toronto and most North American universities recognise the French Baccalaureat and admit holders directly, frequently with advanced standing that can take a year off the degree. In Quebec specifically, a Baccalaureat holder normally enters university without going through CEGEP, which is a genuine two-year advantage over the local route.

The practical consequence: the June speciality grades are not just a French diploma matter. They are the numbers a North American admissions office reads. A student aiming at engineering at McGill and a student aiming at a French classe preparatoire are preparing the same papers, and both need the same thing from this year.

Terminale: the Baccalaureat year

Terminale is where lycee culminates. The student keeps two specialities, alongside the common core science course and, in mathematics, either the Maths Expertes or the Maths Complementaires option depending on their path. The level of abstraction peaks, particularly in the Mathematics speciality with limits, integration, differential equations and geometry in space.

The challenge is double and simultaneous. On one side, passing the Baccalaureat speciality papers in June, which weigh heavily in the final grade. On the other, building a solid Parcoursup application and preparing the Grand oral, all while finishing the syllabus. That concentration of deadlines is what makes organisation and preparation decisive rather than optional.

Mathematics speciality in Terminale

The Mathematics speciality in Terminale is one of the most demanding courses of lycee. Limits, continuity, differentiation, the logarithm and exponential functions, integration, sequences with proof by induction, geometry in space and probability: the syllabus is dense and abstract. For students who take them, the Maths Expertes and Maths Complementaires options add further content on top. Preparing the speciality paper is sustained work, not a revision sprint.

The Physics-Chemistry speciality in Terminale covers mechanics with Newton's laws, waves, energy, chemical kinetics, equilibria, titrations and organic chemistry. The paper demands both a firm grasp of the concepts and real fluency in calculation. The mathematical tools of Terminale, derivatives and antiderivatives especially, are called on constantly, so the two specialities rise and fall together.

The SVT speciality in Terminale deals with genetics and evolution, neuroscience, climate and geology, with a high bar for argued writing. The NSI speciality goes deeper into data structures, databases and recursion. The common core science course, taken by every student, is assessed through continuous assessment and often supplies the topic for the Grand oral.

One exercise set per chapter of the French syllabus, in the format of a class test: 10 questions marked out of 100, a first part on the fundamentals and a second at Baccalaureat level, with a full worked solution for every question. Preparing the Baccalaureat

The Baccalaureat speciality papers are sat in June and weigh heavily in the final grade. They require complete command of the syllabus, but also a precise written method that the markers expect and reward. Starting early avoids the last-minute scramble, which matters all the more because these papers land in the middle of the Parcoursup process.

My preparation is built on past papers and practice subjects worked under exam conditions, to identify what is actually being assessed, build fluency and tighten the presentation. Added to that is the Grand oral, where the student presents and defends a topic connected to their specialities. That is a skill that is trained, not improvised, and it is the part students most often leave until it is too late.

I went through the French system myself (Baccalaureat with the Mathematics speciality), hold a B.Sc. from McGill and an M.Sc. from Concordia, and have more than 10 years of experience. I know the format of the papers, what markers reward, and how the Bac feeds into both Parcoursup and North American admissions, so the scientific specialities are handled by one person rather than three.
