Troisieme is the last year of French middle school, for students turning 14 or 15, matching Grade 9. It closes with the Brevet des colleges, the DNB, the first official examination of a French-system school career. It is not a gate to lycee in the way a Quebec Ministry exam gates a grade, but it is the first time your child sits a national paper marked by someone who has never met them.
The quieter stake matters more. Troisieme is where functions arrive, and functions are the language of all lycee mathematics. A student who leaves Troisieme vague about functions will feel it every week of Seconde.
Troisieme is the final year of college and it carries two stakes that have to be handled together. On one side the Brevet, with a mathematics paper and a science paper combining physics-chemistry and SVT. On the other, preparing for lycee, where both the level and the pace rise again.
The syllabus consolidates the whole of college and introduces ideas that are decisive for what follows: algebra with factorisation and the standard identities, the theorem of Thales, trigonometry in the right triangle, and above all linear and affine functions, the great novelty of the year and the doorway into lycee mathematics.
My work in Troisieme therefore aims at two results at once: a good Brevet, and arriving in Seconde with the tools to meet the jump in level rather than absorb it.
The Troisieme mathematics syllabus is central to everything after it. Algebra reaches its most elaborate form in college with factorisation and the standard identities. The theorem of Thales and trigonometry enrich the geometry. And functions, linear then affine, introduce an entirely new way of thinking about mathematics that sits at the heart of lycee. All of it appears regularly on the Brevet.
Functions deserve particular attention. Understood properly in Troisieme, they make Seconde far easier. Left half installed, they become a lasting handicap through lycee, and the cost shows up in Premiere rather than immediately.
Physics-chemistry in Troisieme goes deeper into chemistry with ions, pH, acids and bases, and chemical transformations. In physics, students work on energy, power, signals and gravitation. This is a substantial part of the Brevet science paper, where the ability to read a document and write a proper answer counts as much as knowledge does.
SVT in Troisieme deals with genetics and heredity, the evolution of species, the immune system and geology. It is a subject where reasoning and written expression weigh heavily, particularly on the Brevet. Students learn to build an argued answer from a set of documents, a skill that carries straight into lycee.
The Brevet assesses what was learned across cycle 4. The mathematics paper covers the whole syllabus, with questions that are usually set in a context, plus one algorithmics question. The science paper combines two subjects among physics-chemistry, SVT and technology. Beyond knowledge, it is method, written presentation and time management that move the final mark.
My preparation rests on real practice: complete past papers from previous years, worked under exam conditions, to identify the recurring question types, build speed and confidence, and polish the presentation markers expect. We also target the chapters that are still shaky, so no easy marks are left on the table.
We consolidate each idea as the syllabus moves, with particular weight on functions and algebra, which decide both the Brevet and the start of Seconde.
Practice on past papers under real conditions, with work on written presentation and time management for the mathematics and science papers.
We anticipate what Seconde will expect, especially in mathematics, so that arriving at lycee is a transition rather than a shock.

One exercise set per chapter, in the format of a class test: ten questions marked out of 100, a first part on the fundamentals and a part of problems, with a full worked solution for every question. Thales, arithmetic, equations, functions, geometry in space, statistics and probability are covered, along with the physics-chemistry chapters on ions, energy and light. I work with Troisieme students from Lycee Marie de France, College Stanislas and other Montreal schools following the French curriculum, in person and online through Microsoft Teams and OneNote. I went through the French system myself, hold a B.Sc. from McGill and an M.Sc. from Concordia, and have more than 10 years of experience. I know the Brevet format and, just as usefully, what Seconde will demand three months later.

Yes, and this matters more than the Brevet. Functions, trigonometry and advanced algebra are the direct foundations of Seconde. A good Troisieme means arriving at lycee with the tools to keep up in mathematics, where the step up is substantial.
