No provincial exam this year, and that is the trap

Families often relax in Secondary 5 because the province-wide mathematics exam is behind them: it was written in Secondary 4. In Secondary 5, the mathematics grade is set by the school, usually through a common year-end paper.

That makes this year more consequential, not less. SN5 mathematics is a hard prerequisite for Sciences de la nature at CEGEP, and it is this grade that admissions offices read. In a program with limited places, a few percentage points decide between an offer and a refusal, and there is no external exam to appeal to afterwards.

SN mathematics in Secondary 5: what to know

The Sciences naturelles sequence is the most demanding mathematics course of the Quebec secondary curriculum. In Secondary 5 it is for students aiming at the Sciences de la nature program at CEGEP and, later, at university studies in science, engineering, health or architecture.

SN5 asks for a real step up in abstraction. Applying recipes is no longer enough: students have to model situations, justify their steps and write complete solutions. Many who sailed through to Secondary 4 without effort meet their first genuine difficulty here.

Unlike Secondary 4, Secondary 5 mathematics has no Ministry examination: it is graded by the school, most often through a common year-end paper. The grade nonetheless counts for more, because it is the one CEGEPs read for admission to Sciences de la nature. This is the year where support most often makes the biggest difference.

Free corrected exercises for SN5

One exercise set per chapter of the Secondary 5 SN syllabus, in the format of an evaluation: 10 questions marked out of 100, a first part on the fundamentals and a second at exam level, with a full worked solution for every question. The square root, absolute value, step and rational functions, exponentials, logarithms, trigonometry, optimisation and geometry are all covered. Each chapter also has a revision sheet naming what actually decides the grade: the forgotten domain restriction, the parameter read backwards, the absolute value solved without splitting into cases. How SN5 mathematics is assessed

One confusion comes up every year with parents and is worth clearing: there is no Ministry examination in Secondary 5 mathematics. The epreuve unique in mathematics is written in Secondary 4, where it counts for half the final result. In Secondary 5, the only Ministry examinations are in French and English.

SN5 mathematics is therefore graded by the school itself. Most Montreal institutions run a common year-end examination, identical across all classes of the same level, and the French lycees set a common paper for the Quebec supplement. The format resembles the Ministry paper: a calculation part and a part of contextualised problems where the student must model, justify and write a complete solution.

The grade coming from the school rather than the Ministry does not make it less decisive, quite the reverse. SN mathematics in Secondary 5 is a prerequisite for the Sciences de la nature program, and the result feeds directly into the file CEGEPs examine at admission. In a program with limited places, a few points separate an offer from a refusal.

Effective preparation starts six to eight weeks before the year-end examinations. We audit the shaky topics, work complete papers under real conditions, and train time management and the presentation of solutions.

From SN5 to CEGEP calculus (NYA)

Passing SN5 opens the door to the Sciences de la nature program, but the transition to the differential calculus course, NYA, is often hard. The pace at CEGEP is faster, the ideas more abstract, and the independence expected far greater.

Certain topics are assumed known on arrival at CEGEP: handling trigonometric functions in radians, the properties of logarithms, certain algebraic identities. A solid SN5 foundation on those points makes the first weeks of NYA vastly easier.

The SN5 Quebec supplement at Marie de France and College Stanislas

At Lycee Marie de France and College Stanislas, students follow the French curriculum and, in parallel, the Quebec mathematics supplement for SN5, required for equivalence with the Quebec secondary school diploma. It is a course of its own, with its own assessments and its own common paper, and an unusual mix of topics for a student of the French system: absolute value, step functions, piecewise functions, linear programming and optimisation.

The problem most families run into: there is almost no suitable material to practise on. On the same chapters, French curriculum exercises are either too advanced or beside the point, and CEGEP resources are too far ahead. The student ends up preparing a common paper with nothing appropriate to work from.

That is why I work from the official SN5 Quebec supplement booklet used in class: the same chapters, the same exercises, and past common papers from previous years. Sessions match exactly what will be assessed, with nothing too easy and nothing off syllabus.
