Where Premiere sits, and why the marks matter now

Premiere is the middle year of lycee, for students turning 16 or 17, matching Grade 11. The important difference from the North American system is that this is not a year of coursework that gets forgotten: the continuous assessment from Premiere is folded into the final Baccalaureat grade. A weak term here cannot be repaired by a strong final exam, because part of the diploma has already been banked.

The other thing to know is the epreuves anticipees: the French language examinations, written and oral, are sat in June of Premiere, a full year before everything else. So a science-focused student still spends part of their spring preparing a literature exam, which is the single most common cause of the workload crunch families notice in this year.

Premiere: entering the specialities

In Premiere the student follows the three specialities chosen at the end of Seconde, alongside the common core that includes the compulsory science course. The scientific specialities step up sharply. Mathematics introduces sequences, differentiation and the dot product; Physics-Chemistry goes deeper into mechanics, chemistry and energy; SVT moves into genetics and the study of ecosystems.

Premiere counts directly toward the Baccalaureat. The continuous assessment enters the final grade, the anticipated French examinations are sat in June, and the student has to decide which of their three specialities to drop for Terminale. The results of this year therefore carry weight on several fronts at once.

Mathematics speciality in Premiere

The Mathematics speciality in Premiere is the direct and demanding continuation of Seconde. It covers numerical sequences, differentiation and the study of functions, the quadratic, the exponential function, trigonometry and the dot product, and conditional probability. Each chapter builds on the last: a backlog accumulated in October becomes very hard to clear by March, which is exactly why regular follow-up matters more here than in any other year.

Physics-Chemistry speciality in Premiere

The Physics-Chemistry speciality goes deeper into the constitution and transformations of matter, with acid-base and oxidation-reduction reactions, motion and interactions, waves, and energy. It combines physical reasoning with careful calculation, and it leans on the mathematical tools being learned in parallel, which is why a student behind in the mathematics speciality is usually behind here too.

The SVT speciality covers the transmission and expression of genetic information, ecosystems and the human body, with a high standard of scientific writing. The NSI speciality develops Python programming, algorithmics and data handling. Alongside them, the enseignement scientifique of the common core, taken by every student whatever their specialities, mixes physics, chemistry, biology and mathematics.

Where students struggle in Premiere

The first difficulty is workload. Three demanding specialities, the common core, and the anticipated French examinations to prepare, all in the same year: the student has to prioritise and hold a pace over ten months. Students who organise themselves badly watch their results slide even when the ability is plainly there.

The second is conceptual, above all in the Mathematics speciality. Differentiation and sequences assume solid automatic reflexes, and any vagueness left over from algebra is paid for dearly. Because each idea builds the next, falling behind in the autumn makes the spring very hard. Regular follow-up is what keeps the thread intact.

I went through the French system myself (Baccalaureat with the Mathematics speciality), hold a B.Sc. from McGill and an M.Sc. from Concordia, and have more than 10 years of experience. That means the scientific specialities are covered by one person who knows both the syllabus and what Baccalaureat markers actually reward.
