Mathematics at Lycee Marie de France

Lycee Marie de France, in Cote-des-Neiges, follows the official mathematics syllabus of the French Ministry of Education. It is a demanding syllabus, where the write-up and the justification count as much as the result, and where assessments are frequent. Many students who are strong out loud lose marks for failing to present a complete and rigorous solution.

I have worked with Marie de France students in mathematics for more than 10 years. I know the syllabus level by level, the textbooks in use and the format of the Brevet and Baccalaureate papers. The aim is not to recite recipes but to understand the reasoning well enough to reuse it on a question never seen before.

Mathematics level by level

College (Sixieme to Quatrieme, Grades 6 to 8)

The foundations of calculation, negative numbers, algebra, the Pythagorean theorem. This is where the automatic reflexes form, or the gaps. Regular follow-up prevents difficulties stacking up before lycee.

Troisieme, Brevet preparation

Algebra and factorisation, the theorem of Thales, trigonometry, linear and affine functions. We consolidate the syllabus and practise on Brevet papers under examination conditions.

Seconde

The big jump into lycee: algebraic calculation, the reference functions, coordinate geometry, vectors and Python programming. We install the rigour and the reflexes needed to aim at the Mathematics speciality.

Premiere, Mathematics speciality

Sequences, differentiation, the quadratic, the exponential function, the dot product, conditional probability. Each chapter rests on the one before, so regular follow-up is what prevents falling behind.

Terminale, Mathematics speciality and options

Limits, integration, the logarithm, sequences and induction, geometry in space, probability. The Maths Expertes option (complex numbers, number theory, matrices) and Maths Complementaires. Intensive preparation for the Baccalaureate speciality paper.

The Quebec supplement: SN5 mathematics

Alongside the French syllabus, Marie de France students take the SN5 Quebec mathematics supplement, required for Quebec equivalence: absolute value, step functions, linear programming, a mix that belongs neither to the French syllabus nor to CEGEP. I have the official SN5 booklet used in class and work directly from it: the same exercises, past common papers. More on SN5 mathematics, or practise on the corrected SN5 exercises, in French.

A method matched to what Marie de France expects

Understanding before reciting

We work on the reasoning so the student can choose the right method for a question they have not seen, rather than reproduce a model.

Writing it the French way

We work on justification and on the presentation of the script, which is exactly what Brevet and Baccalaureate markers reward.

Aligned with the class rhythm

We follow the syllabus and the graded test schedule across the year, with targeted preparation before each important assessment.

Support between sessions, included

A question the night before a test, a problem they are stuck on: the student can message me between sessions, at no extra charge.

Frequently asked questions

Do you tutor mathematics at every level?

Yes, from Sixieme to Terminale: homework support at college level, Brevet preparation in Troisieme, and the Mathematics speciality at lycee, including the Maths Expertes and Maths Complementaires options.

Do you know the syllabus and the textbooks used?

Yes. I work with the same textbooks and the same syllabus as Lycee Marie de France. Sessions are aligned with what the student is covering in class and with the graded test schedule, not with a generic programme.

Do you prepare the Baccalaureate Mathematics speciality paper?

Yes: limits, differentiation, integration, sequences, probability, geometry in space, plus the Maths Expertes and Maths Complementaires options. We work on past papers under examination conditions.

Do you help with the SN5 Quebec supplement?

Yes. I have the official SN5 booklet used at the school and work directly from it: the same chapters, the same exercises and past common papers. Almost no suitable material exists online for this course, so the right booklet makes the difference.
