Quatrieme is the third year of French middle school, for children turning 13 or 14. It matches Grade 8 and Quebec Secondary 3. One year remains before Troisieme and the Brevet, the national examination at the end of middle school. If there is a single year in which to fix accumulated gaps before the stakes rise, this is it.
Teachers and parents notice the same thing: Quatrieme is the year college genuinely changes gear. Abstraction reaches a new level. In mathematics, algebra is no longer limited to simple expressions; students expand, simplify and solve equations. The Pythagorean theorem and powers appear. In physics-chemistry, they enter the invisible world of atoms and molecules, and discover the laws of electricity.
It is also the year in which whatever was left half-finished in Cinquieme comes fully into view. A student who never quite digested negative numbers or algebra finds themselves in trouble quickly, because those ideas are now everyday tools rather than topics. The good news is that these gaps are still easy to close at this stage, provided nobody waits.
My work in Quatrieme has two aims at once: keeping up with the class and closing the accumulated gaps, so that Troisieme and the Brevet start on sound foundations.
The Quatrieme mathematics syllabus is dense. Algebra expands with distributivity and the first factorisations, first degree equations become a tool for solving problems, and powers introduce a new way of writing numbers. The Pythagorean theorem is probably the year's great geometric arrival. All of it demands rigour and regular practice rather than last-minute cramming.
On algebra and Pythagoras, we practise across varied situations until the student can recognise unaided which method a question calls for. That independence is what pays on the day of the test.
Physics-chemistry in Quatrieme introduces abstract but genuinely interesting ideas: matter is made of atoms and molecules, and chemical transformations rearrange those particles. In physics, students meet the laws of electricity, current, voltage, and circuits in series and in parallel. Reading a circuit diagram and reasoning about a circuit are new skills that have to be built rather than assumed.
In SVT, Quatrieme covers reproduction, the first ideas of genetics, and the dynamics of the Earth, including natural hazards such as earthquakes and volcanoes. The subject leans heavily on document analysis and on constructing an argument. Extracting the useful information and writing a reasoned answer is very often what separates an adequate mark from a good one.
The main difficulty is the jump in abstraction. Algebra that keeps growing, a Pythagorean theorem that has to be applied in varied contexts, atoms that cannot be seen: all of it asks for reasoning rather than memory. Students used to learning by heart can feel overwhelmed, when what they are actually missing is a method for reasoning.
The other difficulty is cumulative. In Quatrieme, ideas rest on one another: a shaky foundation in algebra makes equations fail, and failing equations make problems fail. So we treat the cause and not only the symptom, putting the foundations back in order so that everything downstream follows.
We identify what is genuinely blocking, usually in algebra or negative numbers, and rebuild the necessary foundations without spending time on what is already solid.
We work on the current material while closing the gaps, so the student does not drop out of the class rhythm while repairing the past.
On Pythagoras, algebra or electricity, I work on the ability to choose the right method when facing a question they have not seen before. That is what actually counts in Quatrieme.
A question before a test, an exercise they are stuck on: the student can message me between sessions, at no extra charge.
In French
One exercise set per chapter, in the format of a class test: ten questions marked out of 100, a first part on the fundamentals and a part of problems, with a full worked solution for every question. Algebra, equations, powers, Pythagoras, proportionality and geometry are covered, along with the physics-chemistry chapters on atoms, density and pressure, Ohm's law, motion and sound. Each chapter also has a revision sheet. Free, no sign-up, written in French.
I work with Quatrieme students from Lycee Marie de France, College Stanislas and other Montreal schools following the French curriculum, in person and online through Microsoft Teams and OneNote. I went through the French system myself, hold a B.Sc. from McGill and an M.Sc. from Concordia, and have more than 10 years of experience with this syllabus. One person for mathematics, physics-chemistry and SVT, which matters in a year where the three subjects lean on the same algebra.
