Small group tutoring: the standard of private sessions, at a lower rate

Two or three students at the same level, a rate per student that comes down, and a working dynamic individual sessions do not always offer. I run small group tutoring in mathematics, physics, chemistry and computer science in Montreal, in person or online, as a mathematics tutor in Montreal with more than 10 years of experience.

What a small group brings, and what it costs

The real advantages

  • +The rate per student comes down: regular follow-up becomes affordable for more families.
  • +Explaining to the other student: when one reformulates for their partner, they check their own understanding. It is one of my core method reflexes, and the format gives it for free.
  • +Healthy momentum: watching a classmate search, get it wrong and then get it right takes the drama out of error and keeps the pace.
  • +Regularity holds better: a session that commits a friend gets cancelled less.

The honest limits

  • −The pace is a compromise: the session moves at the group's tempo, not each student's.
  • −Less tailoring: very different gaps are hard to treat two at a time.
  • −A compatible partner is required: same syllabus and close level, otherwise everyone loses.
  • −For a deep rebuild or a very close deadline, individual sessions remain more effective.

My job is to steer you honestly: if the student's profile calls for individual work, I say so, even if the group appealed on price. And the reverse holds: for steady consolidation between students at the same level, a pair is often the best value in tutoring.

The configurations that work best

Two classmates, regular follow-up

The ideal case: same school, same teacher, same tests. The session matches the week's syllabus exactly, and both students are preparing the same deadlines. Very common between students at Lycee Marie de France or College Stanislas.

A revision trio before an examination

Brevet, speciality papers, the Ministry examination, CEGEP finals: three students at the same level revising the same syllabus on real papers. The group format suits pre-exam revision well, alongside individual follow-up or on its own.

Siblings, cousins, neighbours at the same level

Two children from the same family or from neighbouring families, in the same year or close to it: the logistics are simple, the rate is shared, and regularity is excellent.

How it works

The mechanics are the same as in individual sessions: a diagnostic at the start, progressive problems calibrated on the real level of the assessments, a wrap-up at the end, and support between sessions included for each student. The session alternates shared time (explaining an idea, correcting together) with time where each student works alone while I move between them.

In person at my place or online through Microsoft Teams and OneNote: the shared whiteboard works as well for three as for one. The exact rate depends on the level and the size of the group, so get in touch to know it. A trial session is possible before any commitment.
