Seconde is the first of the three lycee years, for students turning 15 or 16. By age it lines up with Grade 10 in the North American system and Secondary 4 in Quebec, though the mathematics is nearer to Quebec Secondary 5. It is the last fully general year: everyone takes the same scientific core, and nobody has specialised yet.
Two features have no equivalent in the systems you may be more familiar with. First, physique-chimie is a single subject, not two, and it is graded as one. Second, at the end of the year your child chooses three specialites for Premiere, and that choice, made at 15, narrows what they can study at university. It is closer in weight to picking A-Levels than to picking electives.
Seconde is a transition year that families routinely underestimate. The pace and the level of demand rise sharply compared with college, and mathematics in particular takes a real step up: algebraic manipulation becomes dense, the reference functions appear, geometry becomes coordinate based with vectors, and Python programming enters the syllabus. Every science subject is in the common core this year, which adds up to a heavy workload.
Seconde is also a decisive year for orientation. At the end of it, the student picks three specialities for Premiere, a choice that traces their path all the way to the Baccalaureat and beyond. Succeeding in Seconde means consolidating the foundations of lycee while keeping the doors of the scientific specialities open, since those are the most in demand in higher education.

Mathematics is where the step up is felt most. Algebraic manipulation deepens, students solve equations and inequalities, study the reference functions such as the square and reciprocal functions, and take up coordinate geometry with vectors and lines. Proof moves to the centre of the subject, and algorithmics in Python becomes an official expectation. This is the year students learn to reason mathematically rather than to apply a recipe.
For a student aiming at the Mathematics speciality in Premiere, Seconde is where the automatic reflexes get built. So we work on rigour as much as on understanding: a correct answer written up loosely still loses marks in this system.
Physique-chimie in Seconde lays the foundations of lycee science: the constitution and transformations of matter, motion and interactions, waves and signals, energy conversion. The emphasis falls on experimental method, measurement, units and uncertainty. It is a subject where reasoning and careful calculation count as much as knowledge, and where marks are lost on units far more often than on ideas.
SVT, sciences de la vie et de la Terre, is the French equivalent of biology and earth science taught together. In Seconde it explores the organisation of living things, the major contemporary challenges facing the planet, and the human body. The subject demands cross-referencing data, analysing documents and writing an argued conclusion. Those skills matter for a student considering the SVT speciality, and they carry over into the compulsory science course of the final two years.

One exercise set per chapter of the syllabus, in the format of a class test: 10 questions marked out of 100, a first part on the fundamentals and a harder second part, with a full worked solution for every question. Calculation, percentages, the quadratic, functions, vectors, plane geometry, probability, statistics and Python, plus the eleven physics-chemistry chapters. The main difficulty is the jump in level, above all in mathematics. The pace accelerates and the student is expected to reason and to prove, not merely to apply. Students who never worked at college, because everything came easily there, discover that they do not know how to revise or organise themselves. The shock is methodological as much as conceptual, and it usually shows up in the November results rather than in September.
The other stake is orientation. Choosing three specialities without a clear read on one's strengths or on what each subject actually demands leads to mismatches that become obvious in Premiere, when it is expensive to undo. A combination that matches the student's plans beats a choice made by default or by habit, and the default is usually inherited from whichever friends made it first.
