What an "epreuve unique" is

An epreuve unique is a province-wide examination: written by Quebec's Ministry of Education, identical for every student in Quebec, marked against a common rubric. There is no equivalent in most of North America, where end-of-year testing is set by the school or the board.

Weighting varies by subject. Most Ministry papers count for around 20 percent of the final grade. The Secondary 4 mathematics paper is the exception and counts for half, which makes it the single most consequential exam of Quebec secondary school. It is also the one most families discover late.

What the Ministry examinations are, and why they count

A Ministry paper is written by the Ministere de l'Education du Quebec, the same for every student in the province, and marked against a common rubric. It arrives in May or June, with the whole year's syllabus on the table.

That format changes the nature of the exercise. Through the year, a student is assessed chapter by chapter, shortly after covering the material. On a Ministry paper they have to call on ideas met eight months earlier, choose the right method with no hint about which chapter is involved, and write out a complete line of reasoning. Plenty of students who did well all year are caught out by that alone.

These papers also matter to families leaving the AEFE curriculum for the Quebec system. A student moving from College Stanislas or Lycee Marie de France to a Quebec school discovers, all at once, the CST, TS and SN sequences, the problem situations and the Ministry format. I prepare these transitions regularly: we translate what the student already commands into Quebec vocabulary and close the syllabus gaps before they cost marks. Subjects and exact dates vary with the student's sequence, level and school, and some schools add their own finals at the same time. The school's official calendar is the authority: bring it to the first session and we build the revision plan around it.

The papers that matter most to the students I work with

Mathematics, Secondary 4

The Secondary 4 mathematics paper covers all three sequences (CST, TS, SN) in separate versions, and it counts for half the final grade. It rests heavily on contextualised problem situations where the method is worth as much as the answer: model the situation, set up the calculation, justify, conclude in context. It is also the grade that shapes the Secondary 5 sequence choice. The SN sequence has its own exercise bank, one set per chapter, plus two complete mock exams reproducing the Ministry structure in sections A, B and C. CST has had the same since 2026, chapter by chapter, revision sheets included.

Science and technology, Secondary 4

The science paper (ST, and STE depending on the stream) mixes the material world, the living world, Earth and space, and the technological world. Questions frequently cross two of those in a single scenario, so revision has to cover the whole ground rather than the student's favourite chapters.

Secondary 5: SN mathematics and the end-of-year papers

In Secondary 5, the year-end papers, whether set by the Ministry or by the school depending on the subject, land at the same moment as the CEGEP applications, and the SN mathematics grade weighs heavily there. I prepare that deadline across the full syllabus, with a dedicated exercise bank calibrated on the real level of the assessments.

The French writing paper and the English paper complete the secondary school diploma. On the writing side, I work on structure, justification and correctness of language, which is often where students in French school with English at home lose the most.

How a Ministry examination is prepared

    Diagnosis on a real paper

    We start with a paper from a previous year, timed. In two hours it reveals what is solid, what is shaky and what has been forgotten since the autumn. The revision plan comes out of that, not out of an impression.

    Targeted revision, chapter by chapter

    We revisit the shaky topics in order of weight on the paper, with progressive problems up to the real level of Ministry questions. Chapters already mastered do not eat preparation time.

    Problem situations and writing the method

    The heart of the mathematics papers: contextualised problems requiring modelling then justification. We learn to structure the write-up so the reasoning marks are collected even when the final answer is not perfect.

  4. 4

    Full simulations under real conditions

    In the final weeks, complete papers against the clock: time management, re-reading, checking answers by order of magnitude and units. Exam day should hold no surprise of format.
