Lycée Marie de France: what an English-speaking parent should know

Lycée Marie de France is the largest French school in Montreal. Located in Côte-des-Neiges, it teaches students from primary through the lycée within the AEFE network, the worldwide system of French schools accredited by the French Ministry of Education. Students follow the exact same program as in France and sit the same national exams: the Brevet at the end of Grade 9 (Troisième) and the Baccalaureate at the end of Grade 12 (Terminale).

Many families choose the school for a double recognition: the French Baccalaureate on one side, and a smooth path into Quebec institutions (cégep, university) on the other. Some students also aim for the French classes préparatoires and grandes écoles. If your household speaks English, this dual system can feel unfamiliar, the grade names, the exam-driven assessment, and the emphasis on written, justified reasoning rather than multiple choice.

I bridge both worlds. I am a graduate of the French system and of two Montreal universities, so I can explain the program in English when that helps, while preparing your child for exactly what French examiners reward. Levels and subjects I cover at Marie de France

Collège: Grade 6 to Grade 9 (Sixième to Troisième)

Homework support and steady work in mathematics and physics-chemistry, building the habits that matter later: clean presentation, subject vocabulary, structured method. Grade 9 ends with the Brevet, the first national exam.

Seconde: Grade 10, choosing spécialités

A pivotal year: consolidating foundations while choosing the spécialités for Première. I cover the Seconde program (functions, vectors, probability, forces and motion) and help the family anticipate the demands of each spécialité.

Première & Terminale: spécialités and Baccalaureate

The science spécialités (Mathématiques, Physique-Chimie, SVT, NSI), plus the Maths Expertes and Maths Complémentaires options. Full preparation for the written and practical Baccalaureate exams and the Grand oral.

For English-speaking families at Marie de France

Lessons in English or French

A concept can be explained in English, then rehearsed in the French vocabulary the exam demands. Your child never loses marks for a language gap on a math or science idea they actually understand.

A tutor who knows both systems

If your family later moves toward Quebec cégep and university, I know that path too, including the Quebec complement courses many Marie de France students take alongside the French program.

Written method, the French way

In the French system a correct answer with no justification earns almost nothing. I train the structured, written reasoning that examiners reward, which is often the biggest adjustment for students coming from an English-language background.

One tutor for every science subject

Mathematics, physics-chemistry, SVT and NSI with a single point of contact. A session can cover two subjects when the week demands it, in person in Montreal or online.

What families say

★★★★★

Frequently asked questions

Do you tutor Lycée Marie de France students in English?

Yes. The school follows the French curriculum, but I can explain it in English for families who prefer it. Many English-speaking parents choose the school for the bilingual education, and their child sometimes reasons more naturally in English. I teach the French program in whichever language helps the student most.

Which levels and subjects do you cover at Marie de France?

Collège (Grade 6 to Grade 9) and lycée (Grade 10 to Grade 12): mathematics, physics-chemistry, SVT and NSI, including the Spécialité Mathématiques, Maths Expertes and Maths Complémentaires options.

Do you know the textbooks used at Marie de France?

Yes. I work from the textbooks and resources used at the school, so sessions match what the student sees in class rather than a generic program.

Are lessons in person or online?

Both. In-person in Montreal, or online on Microsoft Teams and OneNote, the same tools already used at Marie de France. Support between sessions by message is included.
