CST is the most widely taken sequence of the Quebec curriculum, and also the one nobody writes about: serious free resources are scarce, even though it ends in a Ministry examination worth half the final grade. Quebec splits mathematics into three streams from Secondary 4, which has no North American equivalent. CST is the most widely taken, and it is routinely described to parents as the lighter option. The calculations genuinely are simpler than in SN, but the questions ask for interpretation, and interpretation is not guessed, it is taught.
This is the most expensive misunderstanding of the year. A student who finds the right number and explains it badly loses marks exactly as an SN student would. Many arrive at the June paper convinced they understood the material because they could compute, and discover they were being asked for something else entirely.
The Culture, societe et technique sequence is for students not heading into pure science or engineering. It does not aim at abstract proof but at equipping a citizen: reading a table of data without being misled by a percentage, understanding what a percentile rank actually says, modelling a situation with the right family of functions, deciding whether two variables are genuinely related.
That does not make CST easy. The calculations are simpler than in SN, but the questions require interpretation, and interpretation is learned rather than guessed. A student who finds the right number and explains it poorly loses marks, exactly as in SN.
The other reality of the year is administrative: a Ministry examination specific to the CST sequence, identical across the province, worth half the final result. A good school year does not compensate for a poor paper.

All 13 chapters of the Secondary 4 CST syllabus have their own corrected exercise set and revision sheet, free and with no sign-up. Each set is in the format of an evaluation, ten questions marked out of 100, a first part on the fundamentals and a second at Ministry examination level, with the full reasoning for every question. The revision sheet does not repeat the lesson: it puts a number of marks on each mistake and gives the exact sentence to write on the paper. These are written in French, which is the language of your child's exam.
Several of these chapters are shared between CST and the Sciences naturelles sequence: the set is then the same one, and it suits both.
The choice is made at the end of Secondary 3 and is hard to change afterwards. It does not measure a student's intelligence; it points them toward different CEGEP programs, and that is the angle to judge it from.
Centred on interpreting data, modelling concrete situations and everyday applications. It leaves social science, arts, letters and a large number of technical programs open. It does close direct access to the Sciences de la nature program, which requires TS or SN mathematics from Secondary 5.
Material close to SN with a more applied and technological approach, more experimentation and instrument work. It leads to CEGEP technical programs and also gives access to Sciences de la nature at several institutions. A good compromise for a solid student who is more comfortable with the concrete than the abstract.
The most abstract of the three, oriented toward proof and algebraic modelling. It is the normal route into Sciences de la nature at CEGEP, then into pure science, engineering, health and architecture.
A student placed in CST because of one bad year in Secondary 3 is not there for the right reasons, and that can be repaired. If your child is in CST and still wants the sciences, a few sessions are enough to tell whether the problem is method or a genuine mismatch, and to prepare a move up to TS.
See the SN4 math page →The Ministere de l'Education produces a separate paper for each of the three sequences, administered in June to every student in the province. For Secondary 4 mathematics it counts for 50 percent of the final result, the other half coming from the school's grade. A student at 75 percent through the year who scores 55 on the paper finishes at 65.
The paper has three sections. Sections A and B assess command of concepts and procedures, with relatively direct questions where conventional preparation works well. Section C contains application situations: a context of several paragraphs from which the student must extract the mathematical tools themselves, carry the reasoning and write it up so it can be followed.
In CST that section is particularly formidable, because its contexts are the most realistic of the three sequences: a budget, a survey, a development plan, a table of raw data. The student has to decide which statistical measure answers the question, or which family of functions models the situation, before touching a calculator. It is as much a reading task as a mathematical one, and it cannot be improvised the night before.
Effective preparation starts six to eight weeks before: audit the shaky topics, work complete papers under real conditions, and train specifically on reading application situations and writing justifications.
A complete paper for the CST sequence, split exactly like the real one: section A in short answers out of 30 points, section B in developed questions out of 30 points, section C in three application situations out of 40 points, all in 150 minutes. The solution names, question by question, the mistake that costs marks and says what the examiner expects to see written.
Take the CST 4 mock paperUnlike SN, where Secondary 5 continues Secondary 4 directly, CST 5 opens chapters that resemble nothing the student has seen: graph theory, financial mathematics, voting procedures, optimisation by linear programming. These are new subjects, often more concrete, and many students breathe easier there than in Secondary 4.
Two things from CST 4 remain indispensable. Systems of equations and drawing lines, because all the linear programming of CST 5 depends on them. And reading a table of data, because the probability block of CST 5 reuses it without re-explaining it. A student who leaves CST 4 shaky on those two points pays for it the following autumn.
That is why I would rather consolidate those two blocks during the CST 4 year than intervene in an emergency the year after, at exactly the moment several CEGEP programs are asking for the CST 5 grade.
See the CST 5 math page →This is what makes CST distinctive and where the marks are lost. Finding a percentile rank of 48 takes ten seconds; saying what that number means for the student concerned, and not confusing it with their grade, is learned.
The syllabus places five side by side: quadratic, exponential, piecewise, step, periodic. The student learns to identify them from a graph or a text, which is exactly what the paper asks.

It closes direct access to Sciences de la nature, which requires TS or SN from Secondary 5. It leaves open social science, arts, letters and many technical programs, several of which require Secondary 5 CST. The exact prerequisite must be checked program by program in the CEGEP's admission guide. Changing sequence later is possible but means bridging courses.

And the application situations of the paper, which require modelling a context before computing anything.
