Mathematics at College Stanislas

College Stanislas, in Outremont, is one of the most demanding schools in Montreal. In mathematics, the rhythm of devoirs surveilles is relentless and the standard of written rigour is high: a correct result with no justification earns almost nothing. Students who do not revise continuously can feel overwhelmed quickly, even when the ability is plainly there.

I have worked with Stanislas students in mathematics for more than 10 years. I know the syllabus level by level, the pace of the graded tests through the year, and the format of the Brevet and Baccalaureate papers. We work on understanding in depth rather than recipes, so the student stays solid even when the assessments stack up.

Mathematics level by level

College (Sixieme to Quatrieme, Grades 6 to 8)

Calculation, negative numbers, algebra, the Pythagorean theorem. At Stanislas, building habits of rigour from college level gives a lasting advantage later.

Troisieme, Brevet preparation

Algebra and factorisation, the theorem of Thales, trigonometry, functions. We consolidate the syllabus and practise on Brevet papers, with careful attention to the write-up.

Seconde

The jump into lycee: algebraic calculation, the reference functions, coordinate geometry, vectors, Python. A decisive year for anyone aiming at the Mathematics speciality.

Premiere, Mathematics speciality

Sequences, differentiation, the quadratic, the exponential, the dot product, conditional probability. At Stanislas the pace is fast, so regular follow-up is what prevents falling behind.

Terminale, Mathematics speciality and options

Limits, integration, the logarithm, sequences and induction, geometry in space, probability. The Maths Expertes and Maths Complementaires options, often chosen by Stanislas students aiming at a classe preparatoire. Intensive preparation for the speciality paper.

The Quebec supplement: SN5 mathematics

Alongside the French syllabus, Stanislas students take the SN5 Quebec mathematics supplement, required for Quebec equivalence: absolute value, step functions, linear programming, a mix that belongs neither to the French syllabus nor to CEGEP. I have the official SN5 booklet used in class and work directly from it: the same exercises, past common papers. More on SN5 mathematics, or practise on the corrected SN5 exercises, in French.

A method matched to the pace of Stanislas

Understanding before reciting

We work on the reasoning so the student can choose the right method for an unfamiliar question, rather than reproduce a model.

Writing it the French way

We work on justification and on the presentation of the script, which at Stanislas is where most of the avoidable marks are lost.

Aligned with the graded test rhythm

We follow the syllabus and the test schedule across the year, with targeted preparation before each devoir surveille.

Support between sessions, included

A question the night before a test, a problem they are stuck on: the student can message me between sessions, at no extra charge.
